What is Dental Bonding?
Direct bonding is a procedure where strong composite resin is applied to the teeth to change its appearance. The material is custom shaded to match the appearance of your other teeth and can be sculpted according to the shape of your tooth. It can be used to fill cavities, but it also has multiple cosmetic applications.
Compared to other treatments such as porcelain veneers, direct bonding can be done fairly quickly – usually in less than an hour. It can last for several years, though the exact amount of time depends on how well you take care of your teeth afterward.
What Does Dental Bonding Fix?
Usually, direct bonding is used for minor cosmetic corrections where porcelain veneers or other extensive procedures would be less appropriate. This can include:
- Fixing cracked or chipped enamel.
- Lengthening teeth so that they appear proportionate with the gums.
- Changing the shape of a tooth.
- Covering minor stains and discoloration.
- Filling small gaps between teeth.
Bear in mind that cosmetic bonding won’t work in every situation. We’ll examine your teeth and help you find the best approach for making the cosmetic improvements you want.
What to Expect During Your Bonding Appointment
Direct bonding is a simple procedure; some patients may not even require a form of sedation, and it can be completed in as little as one visit.
After we’ve chosen an appropriate color of resin, we’ll roughen the enamel before applying a liquid that well let the bonding agent stick to the tooth. After that, we’ll place the resin on your tooth, mold it appropriately and then harden it with a special light. Once we finish it up with some polishing, your new smile will be complete!
Recovery and Aftercare Tips
There typically isn’t any recovery time required after direct bonding, but the material will need some time to set, so avoid especially hard foods during the first day. Also, cigarettes, tea, coffee, and red wine can stain the resin more easily within the first 48 hours, so be careful.
Over the long term, you can take care of the bonding material the same way you would take care of the rest of your teeth. That means brushing twice a day and flossing daily, as well as not biting your nails or other hard objects. And of course, visiting Juno Beach Smiles twice a year is an important part of keeping your entire smile healthy!
