What are Amalgam Fillings and What Should I Know About Them?

June 10, 2014

Shutterstock Happy Male Patient with StaffDental fillings are among the most commonly performed restorative dentistry procedure in America, allowing patients with tooth decay to prevent further damage to their smiles in a way that simultaneously preserves the natural tooth. At Juno Beach Restorative & Aesthetic Dentistry in Juno Beach, FL, Dr. Greg K. Riley and Dr. Duane E. Keuning provide patients with not only the most advanced restorative dentistry options available, but also with advice, information, and insight regarding the treatments we plan for each of our patients.

Amalgam Fillings Vs. Composite Fillings

Amalgam fillings are composed of a mixture of metals, including silver, mercury, tin, and copper. The alloy is placed within the prepared cavity of a decayed tooth to prevent further decay. Because of its composition, an amalgam filling is susceptible to microscopic changes in size and shape when exposed to extreme hot or cold. This may result in tiny fissures in the tooth over time, thereby compromising the structural stability of the tooth as a whole.

Composite fillings, also known as tooth-colored fillings, are made of a composite resin that closely matches the shade of the tooth it fills. The majority of dentists agree that composite fillings are the preferred restorative option. In addition to the fact that they are more aesthetically agreeable, composite fillings stand up to changes in temperature better than amalgams. As with any of our procedures and treatments, our doctors are happy to explain the entire process before your fillings are placed, as well as the pros and cons of each type. We’re here to help you understand your dental care and to assist in your journey toward optimal oral health.

Flossing: A Healthy Choice for a Beautiful Smile

May 20, 2014

Shutterstock FlossingA big part of what we do here at Juno Beach Smiles involves educating our patients regarding the best preventive dentistry practices they can perform at home. Proper at-home care is a fundamental factor in keeping your teeth and gums healthy, and serves as the ideal supplement to routine checkups at our office. At our cutting-edge dental practice in Juno Beach, FL, Dr. Greg K. Riley and Dr. Duane E. Keuning offer a comprehensive menu of general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry services, giving our patients the tools they need to smile brightly and confidently. Today, we focus on flossing.

Flossing: How Important Is It, Anyway?

We all know that brushing your teeth twice a day helps keep your breath fresh, your teeth looking great, and your precious enamel free of the plaque that can cause cavities. Millions of people, however, don’t understand the importance of flossing as well, neglecting this crucial component of their daily oral hygiene regimen at home. The fact is that bacteria that hide between teeth can not only cause tooth decay that you can’t see, but lead to more serious problems like gum disease as well.

Finding the right dental floss for you is largely a matter of personal preference. You want these few minutes that you spend each day to be a positive experience, so choose a floss thickness that is comfortable for you. Ideally, the floss shouldn’t snap up to your gum line harshly once it pushes up between your teeth; this will only cause discomfort and possibly bleeding of the gingival tissue. Our dentists recommend flossing your teeth at least once per day, though using dental floss after daily meals isn’t necessarily a bad idea! The goal is to eradicate as many leftover food particles and bacteria as possible.

Schedule Your Checkup Today

If it has been more than six months since you last visited our office for a dental checkup and cleaning, contact our office today to schedule your appointment! Don’t worry, we won’t judge you if you haven’t flossed in a while; instead, we’ll give your teeth and gums a thorough cleaning and gladly show you the proper way of flossing – one that’s easy to fit into your daily schedule and incredibly beneficial to your oral health. Our conveniently located practice happily serves patients from throughout Juno Beach, North Palm Beach, Tequesta, Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, and beyond.

How Many Teeth Do I Have?

April 30, 2014

restorative dentistryFor today’s post, we want to offer an interesting bit of trivia, besides highlighting a few of our services.

First, the trivia: How many teeth does the average person have?

The average child has 20 teeth—10 on top and 10 on the bottom. For adults, the number is between 28 and 32, depending on whether you still have wisdom teeth. That number breaks down to 12 molars (including wisdom teeth), eight incisors, eight premolars, and four canines. Every one of these teeth is important and should be cared for regularly with brushing and floss.

Of course, some patients are missing one or more teeth. At Juno Beach Restorative & Aesthetic Dentistry, Dr. Keuning and Dr. Riley offer a range of restorative services to help patients replacing missing teeth. Those services include:

Are you missing one or more teeth? One of these services may be able to help you. To find out which, call us to schedule an appointment with Dr. Keuning or Dr. Riley. During your visit, we can explain what the treatment process will be like and answer any questions you might have.

We offer restorative care to patients from Juno Beach, North Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Tequesta, Jupiter, and nearby communities.

How Our Dentists Use Laser Dentistry

April 23, 2014

laser dentistrySince their introduction to the medical field, lasers have changed the way doctors and dentists offer care. With lasers, medical care is more comfortable and less invasive. What’s more, lasers give doctors more control over the entire process. As a result, results are more precise, appointments are shorter, and patients recover much quicker.

But how exactly are dentists like Dr. Keuning and Dr. Riley using dental lasers?

One common use for dental lasers is gum disease therapy. In the past, advanced gum disease therapy required a scalpel and stitches. Today, a dental laser can comfortably remove bacteria below the gumline without the need for stitches at all.

Gum re-contouring is also done with a dental laser. With gum re-contouring, Dr. Keuning and Dr. Riley can quickly and easily remove excess gum tissue from teeth, creating fuller, shapelier smiles.

Other uses for dental lasers include:

  • Cavity detection and treatment
  • Curing bonding materials
  • Biopsies
  • Some forms of teeth whitening

Do you want to know more about how dental lasers are changing today’s dental care? Call Juno Beach Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry for an appointment with Dr. Keuning or Dr. Riley. They would be happy to answer your questions. We serve patients from Juno Beach, North Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Tequesta, Jupiter, and nearby communities.

How Chewing a Piece of Gum Can Help Your Smile

March 14, 2014

gumIf you spend most of your day behind your desk or out and about, you may not be able to brush after every meal. However, there is still something you can do to help your smile. A very simple act can help you clean your teeth and neutralize the acid in your mouth—chewing sugarless gum.

Chewing a piece of gum after meals can help your smile in two ways. First, chewing gum can help you clean leftover pieces of food from between your teeth. When these pieces are left where they are, they can promote the growth of bacteria, which can turn into plaque and calculus. Bacteria, plaque, and calculus can lead to common oral health problems like gum disease and tooth decay. Gum disease will help you remove what’s leftover and help protect teeth.

Chewing a piece of gum will also neutralize the acid in your mouth. Foods that are high in sugar or starch can cause an acidic reaction in the mouth, promoting the growth of bacteria. Gum that’s sweetened with xylitol can offer even more help.

Of course, chewing a piece of gum should not replace regular brushing and flossing or checkups with Dr. Keuning and Dr. Riley at Juno Beach Restorative & Aesthetic Dentistry. Contact us to schedule an appointment. We offer great care to patients from Juno Beach, North Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Tequesta, Jupiter and beyond.

Support Your Smile with Green Tea

February 27, 2014

Green TeaWhat’s the drink most people reach for when they need caffeine? Often, it’s coffee, which works incredibly well but can also give you bad breath and leave stains on your teeth. Thankfully, coffee isn’t your only option for caffeine in the morning. Green tea can give you the same boost while also improving your oral and overall health and reducing your number of dental visits.

People have been drinking green tea for centuries because of its many health benefits. Among the many things green tea can do, it can improve heart health, regulate body temperature, promote digestion, and improve cognitive abilities.

Despite all this, when we drink tea here in America, most people reach for black tea. The problem with black tea, though, is that is has far fewer antioxidants and more caffeine than green tea does. The leaves of green tea, however, are unfermented. Because of this, they have a higher concentration of polyphenol and catechin, which are important antioxidants that can improve cholesterol levels and help with cancer diabetes, liver disease, and more.

But what can green tea do for your smile? Research has shown it can do a number of things. Among them, it can:

  • Reduce the inflammation of gum disease
  • Prevent oral cancer
  • Reduce plaque
  • Repel odor-causing bacteria

Do you drink more than one cup of coffee each day? Why not switch to green tea and see how it changes your life.

Do you have questions about enjoying oral health, or do you need to schedule an appointment with Dr. Keuning or Dr. Riley? Our office serves patients from Juno Beach, North Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Tequesta, Jupiter and beyond.

Crown and Bridgework for Juno Beach and Beyond

February 7, 2014

BridgeAt Juno Beach Restorative & Aesthetic, we’re proud to offer care that’s both affordable and durable.

One service that falls into both of those categories is a bridge. Formally known as a crown and bridge, this restorative service can help a patient replace a single missing tooth or several teeth in a row.

Because a bridge replaces one or more missing teeth, it’s similar to dental implants—another effective restorative service—but there’s a key difference. Dental implants are held in place by one or more prosthetic roots made of titanium. A bridge, on the other hand, helps patients enjoy solid, natural results by attaching to healthy nearby teeth.

A bridge procedure is also less invasive than a dental implants procedure. Getting dental implants requires invasive oral surgery, and the full process takes months to complete. A bridge, meanwhile, can be put in place in far less time and the recovery time is also much quicker. As a result, our patients from Juno Beach and beyond can have a beautiful looking smile again in short order.

Are you ready to restore what your smile is missing? Call Juno Beach Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry for an appointment with our Juno Beach dental team. Dr. Riley and Dr. Keuning would be happy to talk to you about this great tooth replacement option.

We offer restorative care to patients from nearby Florida communities, including North Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Tequesta, and Jupiter as well.

Defend Yourself Against Periodontal Disease at Juno Beach Smiles

January 30, 2014

Shutterstock Periodontal Health BodyWhen most people think about periodontal disease, they think about the obvious symptoms: sensitive and receding gums, bleeding when you brush and even eventual tooth loss. It is, after all, the leading cause of tooth loss in adults in America. Did you know, though, that gum disease can affect your health in other ways as well? At Juno Beach Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry in Juno Beach, FL, Dr. Keuning and Dr. Riley want you to know how periodontal disease can impact your life as well as how to prevent it before it does.

Hidden Dangers of Gum Disease

When you suffer from periodontal disease, the accumulated bacteria in your mouth can spread throughout your body via your blood stream. This can lead to a variety of potentially life-threatening conditions, even in patients who are otherwise healthy. This mouth-body connection is something many patients are completely unaware of, making them even more vulnerable to the following conditions:

  • Pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs)
  • General high blood pressure
  • Poor diabetes management
  • Increased risk of stroke and heart attack
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Fortunately, the periodontal therapy services provided at Juno Beach Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry can help keep your gums and teeth clean and healthy, thereby reducing your risk of developing these kinds of problems.

Take Control of Your Oral Health

If you or someone in your family has begun to notice the signs of periodontal disease, it’s not too late to reclaim your oral health and protect yourself from further damage. Contact us at our Juno Beach, FL office today to find out how Dr. Riley and Dr. Keuning can help you keep your mouth – and the rest of your body – healthy and happy. We also happily welcome patients from throughout the surrounding areas, including Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Tequesta, North Palm Beach and beyond.
